Thoroughly Modern Update

With an eye for detail and an appreciation for the modernist aesthetic, Minnesota interior designer Jodi Gillespie, ASID, has artfully restored a mid-century modern jewel while updating it for a 21st century lifestyle. By honoring the original design’s intent, she has created an interior whose 20th century vibe feels completely contemporary rather than nostalgic.

“The main challenge was to respect and preserve the mid-century modern home while giving it a fresh, updated feel and function,” says Gillespie. Her design solution showcases the existing aesthetic of this significant work of mid-century modernism, while incorporating new amenities.

To preserve the existing modernist aesthetic, Gillespie:

• Kept the original palette and finishes consistent and minimal to allow for the authentic architectural details to stand out.

• Retained as much of the built-in wood details and furniture as possible, including the oak-clad wall, headboard, desk, and dining furniture.

• Incorporated period lighting fixtures and ripple-fold window treatments.

• Extended the existing terrazzo floor in the hallway by adding terrazzo tiles to the kitchen.

Amenities Gillespie added to update the home include:

• Relocating the kitchen to the former maid’s room and reconfiguring it for multiple cooks.

• Extending the master bathroom to include a Japanese soaking tub and separate shower with transom window, dual sinks, and a stackable washer and dryer.

• Creating a sitting area adjacent to the kitchen and dining areas with a fireplace, a TV discreetly located in the wall of cabinetry, and a small built-in docking desk overlooking the garden.

• Adding a powder room near the multipurpose room.

• Turning the guest bedroom into a multipurpose room that serves as an extension of the master suite for fitness and other hobbies, with a Murphy bed to accommodate guests.

• Transforming the former chauffeur’s quarters into a second guestroom.

Project:

Mid-Century Modern

interior designer:

Jodi Gillespie, ASID
Jodi Gillespie LLC Interior Design
Columbus, Minnesota
jodi.gillespieasid@gmail.com
