A key component of the Institute’s effort to develop a world-class manufacturing talent pool, is recruiting more diverse candidates. Recent efforts have focused on two specific populations: women and veterans. The Institute is promoting the role of women in manufacturing through mentoring, recognition, research, and leadership with our STEP (Science, Technology, Engineering and Production) Ahead initiative. Hundreds of women from all levels of manufacturing have been recognized for excellence and leadership in their careers, and now girls will receive encouragement to enter the field of manufacturing through our new mentorship program. American military veterans are also underrepresented in manufacturing, even though they often possess skills that are transferable to the field. The Institute’s Get Skills to Work program combines veterans’ know-how and motivation with industry-based training so they can quickly prepare for manufacturing jobs when transitioning to the civilian workforce. A GET SKILLS TO WORK More than 500 companies reached more than 32,000 veterans last year. The Institute honored 122 women in 2013 and 160 women in 2014.
