2013 MI Annual Report 2013 MI Annual Report : Letter

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Manufacturing is revitalizing our economy and making America strong again. And, when manufacturing investments are strong, a multiplier effect ripples across the economy, creating jobs and growth in other industries. Manufacturing employs more than 12 million people with innovative and rewarding jobs that include salaries and benefits well above the national average. Yet, remarkably, over 80 percent of manufacturers still cannot find the skilled workers they need to fill important jobs within their companies. In a country with an unemployment rate hovering above six percent, this is simply wasteful. Manufacturers need more than someone to document the problem—which they already know. What they need is an ally. Because The Manufacturing Institute represents manufacturers, we are a trusted voice to help manufacturers own and deploy solutions for their human capital challenges. The Manufacturing Institute is aggressively addressing the skills gap with initiatives focused on changing the perception of manufacturing careers, re-establishing the U.S. as the global leader of manufacturing education, and advocating for education and job training policies that strengthen the U.S. manufacturing workforce. We made strong progress in 2013, but there is still a lot of work ahead of us, in 2014 and beyond. We hope you will join us. Jennifer McNelly President The Manufacturing Institute
