Consider stopping in Asheville, NC. One of our favorite places to visit and it’s just over an hour from the Performance Delivery Center. Asheville has some great restaurants, a fun downtown area for walking, the famous Biltmore Estate, and more than its fair share of micro breweries. One of my favorite attractions is the proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is 469 miles of spectacular road that runs from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina to the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. I had long wanted to drive it, but learned the hard way during our first visit in January a few years ago that sections may be shutdown in winter months until snow and ice clear. My first drive was a total of about 100 feet, between gates closing the road in opposite directions, before leaving in defeat. Lesson learned… if you visit in the winter it’s a good idea to check for road conditions and closures at http://www.nps.gov/ maps/blri/road-closures/ During our most recent visit last month, the results were far better. By luck we took Highway 151, the Pisgah Highway, through the Pisgah National Forest to the Parkway. Starting on Hwy 151, which is about 15 minutes west of Asheville, the last 4 or 5 miles leading to the Parkway were terrific. Turn after turn, many are even banked, through a picturesque forest setting. As amazing as the views are from the Parkway, Hwy 151 was a real driver’s delight.
