This approach—which OMj calls a “platform strategy”—is a proven method to increase the social impact of the network and help low-income people move into the economic mainstream. applying this strategy makes it possible for a project to reach scale much more quickly and effectively than a company building a small pilot, then gradually bringing it to scale. One of the biggest challenges in developing programs aimed at reaching the BOp is making contact with not just a neighborhood or village, but with an entire city, region, or country. since margins are low on business models for the base of the pyramid, the key to profitability is scale.
